A list of jobs I have held
in no chronological order......
Putney VT, -- art assistant at [Will's Slow But Cheap Art Service]-- the guy who owned it was an eccentric painter who lived in the woods. he was super cool and his girlfriend at the time was "our lady of cheese" at the brattleboro food co-op. he made his living painting signs for area businesses. he also sold postcards of his drawings. my favorite is of two abandoned cars in the woods. the title is "volvos frolicking". if that doesn't say liberal art town all over it, i don't know what does. his house looked like that cover of the nick drake album where he is looking out the window.
Putney, VT -- food co-op cashier at [Putney Food Co-op] -- i got fired for coming to NY too often
New York, NY -- "computer person" at [Wholesale Copies] -- Freak Show 78!
Monteverde, Costa Rica -- "framer" at [Stella's Studio] -- i went to Costa Rica by myself for 3 months when I was 25 after saving money for two years. I took a week-long class in how to dye fabrics with leaves. there was also a horse stable, organic garden and bakery all on the property. i liked the studio so much, i convinced the owner to let me stay in the cabin behind her garden for free if i framed her 150 watercolor paintings.
Columbus, OH -- "antique book data entry person" at [A.A. Miran Arts and Books] -- the guy who owned it was huge and he wore birkenstocks. He sweated through his beard onto my flipflop-wearing feet as he told me which books to catalog that day. It was gross.
Orlando, FL -- "scenic painter" at [MGM Studios] -- this summer job paid my next year's rent each year at art school
Putney, VT - "copy machine operator" at a local print shop called [Press On] -- i realized that if you ever move to a new town, get a job at the local copy shop. you will meet everyone in town within a month.
Winter Park, FL -- "cornbread and soda server" at [Morrison's Cafeteria] -- this was my first job because i needed the money.
Dummerston, VT -- "assembly assistant" for [Optical Toys] -- a wholesale wacky toy vendor dude who lived by himself and his dog near the main road connecting brattleboro to putney. he was moody but brilliant and looked like a young albert einstein. all he ate were peanuts but he cooked with cast-iron skillets, so he must have eaten warm foods at some point.
Putney, VT - "art assistant" for [Penelope Wurr Glass] -- a fabulous English lady who made her living selling sandblasted glassware wholesale. i sandblasted, packed boxes and complained about boys. she had another assistant with whom i became very good friends and we would cook lunch everyday in her "guest" kitchen. we had tea every day at 11:15am.
Columbus, OH -- "art assistant" at [The Culprit]; a wholesale art business run by a strong-willed lady who used to work at factories in the 70s in Toldeo, OH when she was single mom and then became a full-time artist. she cussed like i've never seen and knew how to run a business so good, i still ask myself "wwbd"?
Bellows Falls, VT -- re-painted victorian ceiling molds in the house of the mechanic who worked on my car in exchange for mechanic work
New York, NY -- "prepress operator" for (Aligraphics] -- a union shop that was corporate but not stiff. the people were awesome awesome and i learned how to cover my ass by writing everything down. my boss called me "shirley" because he thought that was funny. (?)
New York, NY -- "graphic designer" for [will not name the company] -- working for a bunch of street dudes who made it big by having big mouths.
Orlando, FL -- "framer" at [forgot the name] -- a frame shop run by a married couple in downtown orlando. i used to eat lunches around downtown and wish it were busier like the movies.
Columbus, OH -- "ice-cream server" at [Short North Pole] -- i worked here for two years and rode my bike to work listening to Tom Waits pretty much the whole time. and after work, i'd go to Larry's for a drink. (long live Larry's!) i really loved this job but at some point i ended up getting myself fired because i didn't know how to quit when i realized i needed to move on. so i yelled at a customer on purpose and the next day, poof! i was fired.
New York, NY -- "production assistant" at [ESPN] -- three months of my first corporate experience; i was nervous the whole time but somehow did a good job. i left to go back to an ex-boyfriend in a different state. my boss said "well, i guess love wins out on this one, huh!" this was before i found guitar in my life.
Brattleboro, VT -- "counter person" at [Amy's Bakery] -- pretty cool except i hated my life at that point. i did make an excellent hot chocolate though and people would come in and ask for me personally to make their hot chocolate.
Putney, VT -- "graphic designer" for an eccentric man who made a business out of selling these seats that hunters can place around trees while they wait for prey. he was liberal enough though to let me bring my dog to work and he made his own bread.
Orlando, FL -- "painter" for [will not name the company] -- painted over canvas photo prints of scenic old Florida for the wholesale trade. the guy was a total asshole and stole abuncha money from people.
Columbus, OH -- "mural painter" at [Franklin County Correctional Facility] -- i painted two murals in a juvenile jail. my dad drove up to help. it was awesome.
